Job description

We are looking to recruit a full time Social Worker to our Assessing Permanent Carers Team.

The Assessing Permanent Carers Team undertakes assessments of Mainstream, Friends and Family, and Special Guardianship Carers. You will be responsible for a varied caseload of potential carers and assessing their capacity to meet the needs of some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the city.

We are looking for someone with an understanding of what makes a good home for a young person and the ability to analyse and present their findings. An ability to work to the National Minimum Standards for Fostering and also court timescales is essential.

You will join a busy team that works closely with our colleagues in the Fostering Team and also children’s Safeguarding and Permanence teams.

It’s an exciting time to be joining York council. There is a commitment to supporting staff development, and we're currently introducing a new Senior Social Worker career grade (grade 10). This will mean any Social Worker meeting the progression criteria (three years post qualifying experience or local equivalent) can apply to be recruited as a Senior Social Worker. The opportunity to progress to a Senior Social Worker is available to all Social Workers across the service once they can meet the progression criteria.

City of York Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults, and expects all employees and volunteers to share this commitment. We require the successful candidate to undertake an enhanced Criminal Record check via the Disclosure and Barring Service.

This post requires a qualified Social Worker who is currently registered with Social Work England.

The Council is highly committed to investing in the talent and wellbeing of our staff and can offer a generous annual leave allowance, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, comprehensive Health & Wellbeing initiatives and a reward package which recognises your contribution. We can offer flexible working practices, community engagement and volunteer activities and, as part of our commitment to you, promote continuous Learning & Development. In addition we also offer a growing range of discounts, rewards and savings.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C1: Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously, almost effortlessly. Only a conceptually difficult subject can hinder a natural, smooth flow of language.

Hybrid working arrangements are available for this role. Each role at CYC is different and your working arrangements will be determined based on the requirements of the role and in collaboration with you and your needs as part of the recruitment process. Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team.

For further information or an informal discussion about this role, please contact Team Manager James Lee on 01904 553319 or email at j.lee@york.gov.uk

Closing date: Sunday 10 December 2023

 Interview date: TBC
