Job Title: Specialist Teacher of the Deaf
Location: Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
Salary: £28,000 to £30,810 plus two SEN points (£4,787) per annum pro rata
Hours: 7 hours per week, flexible throughout the week
Contract: 2 years Fixed Term
We are looking for a Teacher of the Deaf for a role in North Yorkshire. This role is working one to one with a young adult with autism, who communicates through sign language. The purpose of the role is to develop the young person’s fluency and knowledge in BSL to support her communication development. This will be achieved by creating engaging lessons and activities to develop and extend their communication skills.
Teaching will take place in the family home. The young person will also be supported by a Communication Support Worker/Personal Assistant during teaching sessions. Teaching will be for 5 hours per week, plus 1 hour planning and preparation time and 1 hour planning and supervision with the Communication Support Workers.
Successful applicants will show imagination and creativity, developing new ways for the young person to access and engage with the curriculum and develop their BSL skills.
You will be required to:
Build an excellent rapport with both the young person and their family
De-escalate sometimes challenging situations
Create a calm and positive learning environment
Assist with the development and implementation of the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
Complete a home tuition report after sessions that outlines progress of the student
Liaise closely with the family and other professionals regarding progress in learning and next steps.
Experience/ Requirements:
QTS, QTLS, DTTLS, PTTLS or equivalent
BSL trained – minimum Level 4 with agreement to further training as required
Minimum 6 months experience teaching
Driving license (Essential)
An enhanced DBS on the update service or prepared to apply for a new one
An outstanding classroom practitioner with high expectations
It is an essential requirement of this post that the applicant has an up to date Covid vaccination
